In fact several studies have showed that indoor pollution is one of the main causes of respiratory illnesses that affect large number of people across the globe.

In many homes and offices smoking is one of the main causes of indoor air pollution. To reduce the indoor air pollution in this case the best option would be not to allow smoking inside. If you or someone else wants to smoke then do it outside. Cigarettes contain many chemicals that are not only harmful to the person who smokes, but for those who do not but share the living and/or working environments.

Reducing the amount of air pollutants in your home is a worthwhile, but how do you go about it?

Suggestions for reducing indoor air pollutants:

Don't allow smoking inside your home.
Don't use a wood burning stove or make certain that it is an airtight model if you must use one.
Make certain that your air conditioning filter system is clean and working.
Reduce the amount of moisture in your home to lessen the chance of mold or mildew growth.
Make sure your clothes dryer vents are going outside of the home.
Make sure your bathroom and kitchen fans vent to the outside of the home instead of re-circulating the air.
Ventilate your home several times a day by opening doors and windows for at least a few minutes
Switch from aerosols cleaning products to spray "pump" products.
Use an air cleaner in rooms that do not get a lot of ventilation normally - like a bedroom
Bathe your pets regularly to reduce the amount of dander and hair released into the air
Certain plants are known to reduce levels of chemicals such as formaldehyde, carbon monoxide and benzene. (Peace Lily, Bamboo Palm, Mums, etc.)

Having adequate air ventilation is definitely one of the best ways to reduce indoor air pollution. Excellent ventilation significantly contributes to the quality of air in your home or in your office. This isn't a one time fight...this is a constant battle. Bright Ideas to Conserve Your Electric Bill

You probably don't even realize it, but an energy thief is inside your home at this very moment. This thief is silent and unseen, and he's picking your pocket. His name is "standby power."

Let's start by reviewing some basics:

Choose Your Colors Wisely

Paint the walls of your home a light color. Dark colors tend to absorb light, requiring you to use more energy from light bulbs to achieve the same effect. Not only do light colors on your walls help conserve energy in your home, they also make your rooms feel brighter and more cheerful.

Who Wants To Do the Dishes?

Did you know that a dishwasher that is 90% full uses 4 units of electricity? And if it is only 50% full, it still uses 3 units of electricity. Try to fill the dishwasher to save on your electric bill.

Light Up

Replacing a single incandescent bulb with an energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulb (one of those "squiggly bulbs") can save up to $50 over the bulb's lifetime.

75% of electricity used by home electronics is consumed while "OFF". By using a power strip and switching off when not in use, you lessen CO2 emissions and reduce your energy bill.

Get the Best Load from your Washing Machine

They say front-loader models use 25% less energy than a standard model. However, if you can find an energy efficient washer machine that fills the washer based on the amount of laundry inside that would be more conservative. Simply switching from a hot/warm cycle to a warm/cold cycle when washing laundry can save you 10 cents a load. That adds up when you think about how many loads of laundry you do a year.

Ditch the Dirty Filters

Check your Heat and Air Conditioning filters regularly. Cleaning or replacing filters once a month during periods of high use will insure proper air flow, promote better health and increase efficiency.

If you are concerned about air quality, consider a dust collector or air filtration system.

Get With the Program

Energy efficient thermostats can save you money. Why pay for heat or AC you don't need? You can save energy and money by using a programable thermostat. It can reduce your energy needs from heat or AC when you are at work, away at vacation, or asleep.

Create the ideal indoor climate by enabling the thermostat to automatically heat up at dawn on a cold morning or to run the air conditioner for longer hours over a summer weekend. By adjusting the thermostat to operate primarily when household members are home, the device reduces wasted energy and minimizes the size of the electric bill in addition to maximizing comfort.

Close Empty Rooms

If there are rooms in your house that aren't being used, shutting the doors to those rooms results in an overall reduction in the amount of area that the heating and air-conditioning systems have to heat and cool. When a child moves away from home to go to college, or when parts of the basement aren't being used, isolating those areas from the rest of the house means less demand in terms of heating and cooling, and a lower energy bill. The less space you need to supply with conditioned air, the less often the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems will need to operate.

Beat the Summer Heat with Your Windows

During the summer you'll want to close shades and drapes in order to keep the warming rays of sunlight out of the house, reducing the load on the cooling system.

Lights Out

Though it's a simple energy-saving step, the concept of turning off lights when leaving a room seems to elude many people who subsequently complain about their utility bills. The fact is, if a light is off, it uses no electricity. So only turn on lights that are necessary for use. It's that easy to save energy.

One urban myth says that turning on a light uses far more energy than it consumes while it is operating. Not so. It is true that when an incandescent or fluorescent lightbulb is first switched on, it requires a brief surge of electricity. But that surge is so short that it doesn't make any practical difference. With fluorescents, the electricity consumed during start-up is equivalent to only a few seconds' worth of running the light. So keep bulbs that aren't being used turned off.

Ceiling Fans

The use of central or room air-conditioning (and the high electrical costs associated with each) can be reduced by deploying a time-honored strategy – getting the air around you to move. A simple desktop or standing fan that sweeps the room every few seconds makes the air seem cooler by several degrees.

Ceiling fans are a great boon in this regard since they gently move all of the air in a room at once. Ceiling fans can draw up and distribute the cooler air that lies along the floor throughout the entire room.

It is so important to do your homework these days, especially when it comes to keeping your family and home safe from mistakes that can come from unqualified contractors. Below are some quick tips on what you should do before hiring someone to work on any heating and cooling service on your property.

1. Ask for Referrals: Ask friends, neighbors, and co-workers for contractor referrals. You can also contact local trade associations for names of members in your area. Or check out the listings provided on their directory like Katy Pros. Look for reviews of their business on local review websites to see what others are saying about that organization or contractor.

2. Research: Find out about license and insurance requirements for contractors in your state. And before you call a contractor, know the model of your current system and its maintenance history. Also write notes of any uncomfortable rooms. For instance, does it feel warmer in one of the bedrooms and the other rooms are comfortable?

The recently passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 provides a tax credit of 30% of the installed cost of qualifying high-efficiency heating and air conditioning equipment, up to a maximum of $1,500 for 2009 and 2010 combined.

Don't wait to maximize this opportunity! In general, if you spend $5,000 on qualifying products and installation, you will be eligible for the full $1,500 tax credit.

And don’t forget: a tax credit is subtracted directly from your total tax amount. For example, if your calculated tax is $1,500, you would subtract the $1,500 tax credit and end up paying no taxes this year!

QUICK VIEW ON QUALIFYING TAX CREDITS:

Effective Dates: The new credits are available for qualifying products that are "placed in service" between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010.
Amount of Tax Credit: 30% of the installed cost of qualifying equipment, up to a maximum of $1,500 total for 2009 and 2010 combined. If a qualifying tax credit does not total $1,500, the unearned portion of the tax credit can be earned at a later time with a separate qualifying purchase (That is until 12/31/2010).
How to Claim Tax Credit: Specific information on how to claim the tax credit should be obtained directly from the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. Manufacturer’s Certification Statements are provided for your records and to support your Tax Credit claims for these systems. Have your installing contractor circle or highlight the system installed in the home.
Do all Energy Star products qualify? No, not all. The minimum efficiencies for this new tax credit are higher than the minimum requirements to qualify for the ENERGY STAR designation. Some ENERGY STAR equipment meets tax credit minimums; some does not. Check the manufacturer's certification statement carefully to be sure.
Do Third Party Coils Qualify When Installed with American Standard Outdoor Unit? International Comfort Products, LLC, does not rate its outdoor sections with third-party indoor sections (coils) and thus is not able to certify such combinations. The third-party manufacturer of the indoor section may elect to rate such combinations and to provide certification statements.
